"Chantlaca" derives from the Nahuatl language:  "chante" meaning house or home and "tlaca" meaning "man." Together, it can mean the "house of the men", or more loosely "homeboys."

INDIGENOUS INTERNATIONAL TRADE CENTER LAUNCHED

June 21, 1996

Phoenix, AZ - TONATIERRA, working with the Indigenous Peoples Alliance organizations and OrigiNations has launched an international indigenous trade enterprise called CHANTLACA today in Izkalotlan, Aztlan (Phoenix, AZ).

To initiate the trading bloc of native trade items, the CHANTLACA has imported three tons (2,850 kilos / 6,270 lbs) of high quality coffee from the Indigenous Autonomous Regions of Chiapas, Mexico.

Following in the traditions of trade routes that spanned the continent, the exchange of Maya coffee is a historic first, being a completely indigenous collaborative effort between the autonomous regions of the Mayan Nations of Chiapas and the Xicano Mexicano autonomous Pueblos of Aztlan.

The coffee to be marketed under the label CAFE MAYA IK' will be the intial catalyst for development of Nation to Nation trade networks between the First Nations of Turtle Island, Abya Yala, Itzachilatlan, otherwise know as North America.  A secondary market shall encompass the international commodity markets and the general public.

The first sample of coffee was imported in January of 1996 while representatives of TONATIERRA were attending the FORO NACIONAL INDIGENA covened by the Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional (EZLN) in Chiapas, Mexico.

Samples have been distributed to interested buyers and associates among the Mohawk, Onieda, the O'odham, the Yavapai, Tesuque Pueblo, and other indigenous nations as well as to other select houses.

The response to the CAFE MAYA IK' has been very positive.  This high grade coffee is imported from one of the most impoverished indigenous regions of Mexico, and is being produced and marketed by the Indigenous Peoples themselves as an expression of autonomy after 500 years of colonial oppression.
